(Orenji Teahouse)

Brand identity | Art curation | Packaging | Copywriting (ENG/JP)

おれんじ喫茶店 (Orenji Kissaten) is a Japanese teahouse cafe specialising in developing citrus-infused tea and coffee beverages. They want to revive traditional favourites and deepen the cultural experience linked to these classics.

Outcome:

  • + 15% customer engagement

  • + 21% brand retention

  • Custom copywriting system that works across langauges, inspired by Haiku

Great tea, great art.

The design integrates Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock paintings) to immerse the consumer into the Japanese-rooted experience.

Haiku are also printed onto packaging and carriers, so consumers can drink good tea and experience good poetry.

Savoury and sweet

Taking this a step further, custom product descriptors are also written using the traditional haiku poetic structure: 5 syllables on the first line, 7 on the second, and 5 again on the third.

The structure of haiku are uniquely suited for creating brand experiences, especially when paired with a deeply cultural brand.

The concept of 余白 (to leave white space) applies to the writing, but also the layout design. Color is purposefully restrained to emphasise the artwork and typography.

Each touchpoint is imagined as an artpiece in a gallery. Products are designed to be beautiful mementos after consumption.

Each haiku is written to reflect the flavour profile of the citrus/tea combinations, as well as the atmosphere they are best enjoyed in.

Carefully considering season, weather, time of day, etc. All elements that give haiku its signature weight and simplicity.

Modernised heritage

The logo is developed by modernising the aesthetics of 家紋 (Kamon, Japanese family/clan crests). The crest is formed by the katakana glyphs for オレンジ (orenji, orange in Japanese).

Katakana was chosen for its linguistic modernity and geometric simplicity.

A perfect blend of tradition and contemporary.
